community profile
Labeled the "Fastest Growing County in New York State", Jefferson County is experiencing an unparalleled economic boom as a result of the expansion at Fort Drum. The population has grown by 5% in the past two years, housing starts are up 18% and the retail, service and hospitality sectors are growing proportionately. It's an exciting time to be here, especially for those living in the county or relocating to the area.
The Greater Watertown area is a great place to live and to work. Located in northern New York State, we are proud of our lush farmlands, miles of waterfront and acres of forests, quaint villages, a booming commercial center, and of course, Fort Drum, home to the 10th Mountain Division, one of the most deployed divisions in the Army.

With four distinct seasons there is something fun to do every month of the year. Lake Ontario is our western boundary, the St Lawrence River/1000 Islands our northern, and the Tug Hill Plateau our southern, resulting in a county where water sports and outdoor recreation flourish. We are within a few hours drive of Lake Placid, New York, Boston and Philadelphia, and our close proximity to Canada makes international travel to Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto a simple trek. The Watertown International Airport, a regional airport with service from Cape Air, links Watertown to national and international airports globally.
Watertown is the commercial hub of Jefferson County, and is home to nationally recognized manufacturing facilities like Car-Freshner's "Little Tree" air freshners. There are numerous national retailers and restaurant chains here, as well as many quaint shops and boutiques found throughout the county.
The growth at Fort Drum has helped bring diversity to the area, and a renewed appreciation of our good schools, safe neighborhoods, affordable housing, and a variety of job opportunities (see links below). The community supports the soldiers and their families with programs like Adopt-a-10th Mountain Platoon and our signature Yellow Ribbon events, and the blend of the military and civilian communities makes the Greater Watertown area one of the best places to live in the country.
