Meet McKenzee Fisk-Kamide, a dedicated community leader and Partner and Architecture Department Manager at GYMO Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, and Construction Management. Her journey with the GWNC Chamber began at local networking events, where she quickly discovered her passion for supporting small businesses and fostering community growth. Now an active board member, McKenzee is proud to contribute to the Chamber’s mission of collaboration and community success. She finds inspiration in seeing projects come to life and values volunteering as a way to connect with others, grow personally, and make a positive impact.
1. Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to get involved with the GWNC Chamber?
I moved back to the North Country shortly after college. Over the past 5 years, I have had the privilege of managing the Architecture Department at GYMO Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying and Construction Management, one of the most reputable design firms in the region.
My introduction to the Chamber came through attending their networking events, where I quickly realized my desire to become more involved. My client, who was an active Board Member at the time, recommended me, and the rest is history.

2. Outside of your role on the board, what personal or professional passions keep you energized?
My personal passions include my two doodles, Archie and Winnie, who bring joy and energy to my life. Professionally, I am driven by the creation of spaces that strengthen our communities. Witnessing a project come to life and positively impacting those who use the space is both rewarding and inspiring.
3. What motivated you to join the board, and what drives your dedication to supporting our community’s growth?
I am a firm believer in the Chamber’s mission and its vital role within our community. The Chamber is dedicated to promoting and supporting businesses, thereby enhancing the quality of life and work in our region. I believe that volunteering not only enhances personal growth but also strengthens communities and fosters a greater sense of purpose.
4. Is there a favorite memory or accomplishment from your time on the board that stands out?
I thoroughly enjoy the Chambers numerous networking events. The ones that resonate most with me are those that have a personal connection. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies and Business After Hours events, where we celebrate my clients and the projects I have contributed to, are particularly memorable for me.
5. What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the board or getting more involved in serving our community?
Select an organization whose mission aligns with your values and passions. Your commitment and contributions will be more impactful and fulfilling when you are genuinely invested.
6. What’s your favorite local spot or hidden gem in our community?
One of my favorite local spots is Thompson Park, where my husband and I frequently walk our dogs. We are fortunate to have such a spacious and beautiful park to enjoy.
Last summer, we took our boat to Canoe Point and hiked the 2.5 miles to Grindstone Island Winery, discovering what an incredible hidden gem it is. The adventure to get there was part of the experience and completely worth the trip.

7. If you could describe the GWNC Chamber in one word, what would it be and why?
Community – The Chamber prides itself on promoting and protecting the interests of its members through meaningful connection and dynamic collaboration.
8. What’s the best networking tip you’ve ever received, and how has it helped you?
The best networking tip I have ever received is to be an active listener, effectively communicate and always follow-up. Building meaningful and authentic relationships is extremely important both personally and professionally.

9. Is there a book, podcast, or resource that’s been valuable for your professional growth?
The best resource for my professional growth has been both my peers and my husband. It has been incredibly valuable seeking feedback, giving and getting mentorship, sharing knowledge, and experiences with my peers.
My husband is always encouraging me to push myself and not be afraid to take risks. His professional growth within his career has also motivated me to take on new roles within mine.
10. Share a fun or surprising fact about yourself so we can get to know you better!
My husband and I along with some close friends participated in the Tunnel to Towers Foundation National Run, Walk & Climb Series, it was one of the most emotional and inspiring events I have ever been part of. Proceeds from the event support the Foundation’s programs, including those benefitting first responders, and catastrophically injured service members. “While we have time, let us do good.”
